AAA reminds drivers to be aware of road debris this winter
WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – AAA is reminding people this holiday season that while the snow makes for dangerous roadways, road debris, including poorly secured Christmas trees that fall off your car, can make roads even more treacherous.
Officials say road debris on average contributes to 53,000 crashes, 5,500 injuries, and 72 deaths each year.
To keep you from contributing to the road debris dilemma, AAA asks you replace worn or underinflated tires to avoid blowouts, inspect exhaust systems for rust or corrosion, and ask technicians to look for issues during oil changes.
And as for your trees, AAA asks say you should wrap it up, put it on your roof rack or truck bed with the trunk facing the front of the vehicle. Tie it down at its bottom, center and top, with strong rope, and loop that rope around the tree trunk. Give the tree a few strong tugs from different angles to make sure it’s tight, and drive slowly.
