Prescribed pile burns planned for Cibola National Forest starting next week

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Two prescribed pile burns are planned for the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands. According to officials, the Cedro Unit Prescribed Pile Burn is set for 15 acres of piles in the Cedro Unit, which is located south of FSR 462 and east of NM-337 in the Mazanita Mountains. Smoke could be visible from Albuquerque, Tijeras, Edgewood, and Moriarty.

The Sulphur Unit Prescribed Pile Burn is set for 18 acres of piles in the Sulphur Unit in the Sandia Mountains. The area is north of I-40, west of NM-14, and south of NM-536. Smoke could be visible in Albuquerque, Tijeras, Edgewood, and Moriarty.

Those areas may be closed to the public for several days. There will be warning signs along roads both before and during the burns.

According to officials, smoke should lift during the day, but overnight, temperatures could cause it to settle into low-lying areas near the burn areas.
