Peoria crews to work 12-hour shifts during weekend winter weather

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria Public Works Department will begin 12-hour shifts Saturday night as crews prepare for more winter weather.

Starting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6, crews will remain on the shifts to make sure roadways are treated and cleared as efficiently as possible, said public works spokesman Nick McMillion.

WMBD’s Chief Meteorologist Chris Yates says it looks like most of the area could receive at least two inches of new snow.

Freezing rain is expected to begin around 9 p.m., transitioning to snow as temperatures drop. The system is expected to be out of the area by 7 a.m. Sunday.

McMillion said Public Works staff will actively monitor conditions throughout that time and respond as needed.

Drivers can expect slick roads overnight and on Sunday morning. Those behind the wheel are also encouraged to reduce their speed and allow for extra travel time.
