Cold weather challenges seasonal workers as temperatures drop

As the bitter cold settles in, for those working outside, one of the biggest challenges they face is staying warm.

Tom Wilson has been loading Christmas trees at Taylor Christmas Tree Farm for four years.

We have Douglas fir, Frasier fir, the main the best ones.

Despite a milder winter, he said it doesn’t make being out in the elements any easier, especially tying trees to the tops.

“Sometimes they get too loose or you get tight ones and then it’s a lot easier,” Wilson said. “Or just take your gloves off and then tie the tree and then put the gloves back on.”

The farm emphasizes finding warmth, with a fire pit and an RV for breaks.

“I mean, they’re pretty quick when it gets cold. It’s amazing how fast the decisions take place when the weather gets colder,” Bruce Taylor, the owner, said.

Across town in the Short North, vendors at Holiday Hop face similar challenges.

“Oh my gosh, so I was worried, it’s 30 degrees out here, like, are people gonna come and it’s been nonstop,” Stephanie Clawsom of One 80 Reasons said.

They use generators, portable heaters, and hot drinks to stay warm.

“We’re all pretty bundled up but I guess when you’re out in the cold for so long you just kind of get used to it,” said another vendor.

Despite the cold, the holiday spirit prevails.

“We feel really fortunate that we get to do this for a living. And Columbus gave us that,” Evan Bunn with Local Yokels Trading Company said. “The Christmas cheer definitely keeps you warm.”
