Reaching the Uninsured: Expanding Health Care in North Florida
November 1 marked the beginning of the 2026 Open Enrollment Period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. For countless families in the communities we represent, this moment carries significant weight.
With the end of enhanced federal subsidies and new federal regulations that no longer allow year-round enrollment for low-income individuals, many of our constituents are now dealing with higher premiums, stricter deadlines, and fewer financial safeguards. These changes could leave hardworking Floridians, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, without the health coverage they rely on.
As your elected officials, we are committed to helping you and your family prepare for the ACA Open Enrollment period, which started on November 1 and will continue through January 15, 2026.
We are collaborating with Capital Health Plan and LaShawn Gordon, executive director of United Partners for Human Services, to organize an educational session that will be the first of a series of community town hall meetings across our districts. These events are designed to equip residents with the knowledge and support needed to successfully navigate the 2026 ACA Open Enrollment process.
Dr. Lynn Jones, Chief Medical Officer at CHP, recently emphasized, “Health coverage is more than just a financial safety net—it’s the key that opens the door to a lasting relationship with a primary care physician. When you have coverage, you have the support and resources to build that essential connection, which is the foundation for better health and well-being.”
The events will include:
- Hosting community education sessions in Tallahassee, Quincy, Monticello, and Madison.
- Bringing enrollment services directly to communities through mobile pop-up events.
- Partnering with local churches, schools, and nonprofits to reach those most vulnerable.
These events will serve as crucial platforms where community members can gain the knowledge and support they need before the ACA Open Enrollment process begins. Together, we will answer questions, address concerns, and ensure your family can make informed decisions about your health coverage.
Access to healthcare starts with access to health coverage. We encourage you to take action during this important enrollment window. Even if you’ve never enrolled before, or think you might not qualify, there are new tools and resources available to help you find a plan that fits your needs and budget. Healthcare is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Let’s work together so every family in our districts has the opportunity to stay healthy, covered, and secure.
