Church Provides Food Assistance to Families Without SNAP This Month
LAKE CHARLES, La. – For the past 20 years, Christian World Ministries has been offering a food pantry every first Saturday of the month. This monthly event has become a vital resource for many in the community, especially as the ongoing federal government shutdown continues to affect SNAP benefits for families.
Pastor Hope Snider shared her observations about the increased demand this month. “It’s a little bit more today. We can definitely see that cars are still coming in. They were lined up here at 8 o’clock this morning ready to go. So, yes I think it is a little more and also the holiday season we know there’s economic things going on. We all feel it but also the holiday season coming up with Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’ll always increase the number,” she said.
The food pantry operates with over 20 volunteers and collaborates with the Second Harvest Food Bank. The items distributed include canned goods, frozen foods, dairy products, and fresh produce. These essentials help provide nourishment to those in need.
Senior Pastor Jerry Snider emphasized the importance of the ministry’s mission. “I believe we are blessed to be a blessing and everything that we do. I believe that Jesus said you do this for the least of these you do this under me and so again we could not do this without the heart of this community,” he said.
On the most recent Saturday, the pantry served over 300 individuals. Volunteers start preparing for the event well in advance, ensuring the warehouse and bags are stocked with food items.
Assistant Pastor Jeremy Damiata explained the preparation process. “We always want to prepare with a margin so as we’re building bags we want to make sure we have a little bit in case throughout the week we may have a family that’s in an emergency and they need food.”
For the December food pantry, the church plans to distribute a limited number of grocery gift cards. This initiative aims to offer families additional support during the holidays.
“The powerful thing about that is not only are they getting groceries here but we’re going to give families the dignity to go and shop and pick out things as a family maybe for a Christmas meal. It’s going to be a blessing to them that allows them the dignity to shop for themselves,” Damiata said.
This effort highlights the commitment of the church and its community partners to ensure no one goes hungry, especially during times of economic hardship. The continued support from volunteers and local organizations plays a crucial role in sustaining this important service.
