WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) – As of November 1, federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as food stamps, has expired. In response, Triple A’s Soulfood in Wasilla is providing free lunches to those in need.
“A lot of families are relying on their benefits to come,” said Symone Stewart, owner of Triple A’s Soulfood. “We want to be those people who can offer a little bit of help and hope.”
Stewart explained that SNAP recipients and furloughed federal employees with valid identification can receive free lunches. Much of the food served comes from donations made by community members.
“We are really happy to be a vessel, to have a platform to be able to help someone,” she said. “It feels good to be able to give someone a hug through food and also allow them to know that we are here for them as well.”
Stewart, who relocated to Alaska from Texas in 2017, shared that her desire to assist others stems from personal experience.
“I have been in that place specifically myself, myself and my family,” she said. “So, we do kind of know how it feels.”
She emphasized that the free meal program will continue until the situation changes.
