Cleveland Public Library Hosts Diwali Celebration with Hands-On Lantern Crafting
Cleveland, Ohio — The Cleveland Public Library recently celebrated Diwali with a vibrant and interactive lantern crafting program at the Eastman campus. Participants engaged in a creative activity where they painted their own handcrafted lanterns while learning about the traditions and significance of Diwali during a cultural celebration.
The event was hosted by Cassandra Feliciano, a children’s librarian at the Eastman Campus. She provided insights into Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, which is observed by millions around the world. The festival holds deep cultural and religious significance, especially within the Hindu community.
Attendees were given sphere-shaped paper lanterns in various colors to decorate and personalize. Each lantern came with a battery-operated light that could be used at home. This hands-on approach allowed participants to take part in the celebration and bring a piece of the festival back to their homes.
Feliciano emphasized the importance of learning from one another and celebrating the diverse cultures that make up the community. “It’s wonderful to see people of all ages come together to explore a tradition they might not know, express their creativity, and share laughter and connection,” she said.
Her goal is to use the library’s resources to introduce program participants to the different cultures found in Cleveland neighborhoods. By offering such events, the library plays a vital role in promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity.
The timing of the event aligned with Diwali celebrations happening globally. Millions of people light lamps and share sweets during the festival. The name Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “row of lamps.” The five-day festival symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil in Hindu tradition.
Over time, Diwali has grown beyond its religious roots to become a global celebration of hope, renewal, and unity. Families illuminate their homes with oil lamps, exchange gifts, and share festive meals during the celebration.
