The Unsung Heroes of the School: A Custodian’s Perspective

In this week’s Hallway Voices, we had the opportunity to speak with Dzenita Kolar, a dedicated custodian at the Washington School of Early Learning, who shared her experiences and insights into her daily work.
A Long-Term Commitment to Education
Dzenita has been a part of the Neenah Joint School District since 2012, beginning her journey at Lakeview Elementary and the Administration building. She transitioned to the Washington School of Early Learning in 2014, where she has remained for over a decade. Her role as a custodian is not just a job—it’s a passion that she has nurtured over the years.
Daily Responsibilities and Seasonal Changes
Dzenita’s tasks vary depending on the time of year. During the summer, she focuses on deep cleaning and preparing every room for the upcoming school year. This includes ensuring that everything is clean, organizing classrooms according to each teacher’s preferences, and checking that all outlets and fixtures are functioning properly. She also monitors the exterior of the building, passing any necessary maintenance issues to the grounds crew.
During the school year, her focus shifts to maintaining the building’s cleanliness, safety, and overall functionality. It’s a constant effort to keep the environment welcoming and conducive to learning.
The Joy of Interaction
One of Dzenita’s favorite parts of the day is the morning rush when she sees the students arriving at school. The sight of their smiling faces and their eagerness to learn brings her immense joy. It’s a reminder of the impact she has on the lives of the children, even if it’s not always recognized.

Outside of work, Dzenita finds joy in cleaning and taking care of her home, which aligns with her professional passions. She also enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, and traveling to Bosnia whenever possible. These hobbies provide her with a sense of balance and fulfillment.
