The Deception of DJ Carey
DJ Carey, a former Kilkenny hurler, has been revealed as the perpetrator of a scam that targeted multiple individuals who believed he was seeking help for cancer treatment. Among those deceived was Christy Browne, one of 13 people named in court as victims of the fraud. Browne had initially suggested setting up a GoFundMe page for Carey’s supposed medical expenses but was discouraged by Carey himself.
Browne explained that Carey was concerned that a crowd-funding page might lead people to associate the campaign with his sister, Catriona Carey, who has faced legal charges related to money laundering. Instead of using an online platform, Browne and two friends pooled their resources to provide funds directly to Carey. This decision later led to significant personal consequences for Browne, as he had to explain the situation to his friends and admit he had been misled.
The deception unfolded over an extended period, with conversations taking place through phone calls and WhatsApp messages. As more people began offering financial support, Browne found himself in a difficult position. He had to confront his friends and explain that he had been tricked into giving money to Carey, which left him feeling embarrassed and betrayed.
Browne had known Carey through his father, who was also a prominent hand-baller in the GAA community. This connection made the betrayal even more painful for him. Carey had initially reached out, claiming he needed money for urgent cancer treatment in Seattle. After receiving the funds, Carey sent a message confirming the treatment had been completed and promised to stay in touch upon his return. However, there was no further communication from Carey, and Browne eventually learned about the fraud from a law enforcement agency.
Browne had a history of raising money for various causes in his community, which may have contributed to his initial willingness to help Carey. Now, he is more cautious when approached for assistance. He expressed feelings of disappointment, not only because he was deceived but also because he trusted someone within the sporting community.
Another victim, Thomas Butler, shared his emotional response to the revelation. He had donated €16,000 to Carey, believing it would be used for cancer treatment. Butler, who had volunteered with the Irish Cancer Society, felt deeply affected by the lie. He described the experience as “gut-wrenching,” especially since both of his parents had died of cancer.
In another instance, Carey contacted Aidan Mulligan, who knew him through his wife, BrÃd. After expressing condolences over BrÃd’s passing, Carey asked for money for medical treatment. Mulligan sent Carey €8,500, only to later discover he had been deceived.
These cases highlight the vulnerability of individuals who are willing to help others, especially within close-knit communities. The impact of such fraud extends beyond financial loss, causing emotional distress and eroding trust among those involved.
