Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Dietary Supplement
A multi-state salmonella outbreak has been linked to a popular dietary supplement, according to recent warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The outbreak has affected individuals in seven states, including Virginia and New York, with health officials reporting 11 confirmed cases across Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Three of those infected have required hospitalization, though no deaths have been reported.
The Culprit: Member’s Mark Super Greens
The illnesses have been traced back to Member’s Mark Super Greens, a dietary supplement powder that contains moringa leaf powder. This product was available nationwide at Sam’s Club stores and online. In response to the outbreak, the company has halted distribution of the product. However, officials are cautioning that some consumers may still have the supplement at home.
The CDC and FDA are urging consumers to immediately discard or return the product. All lot codes and best-by dates of Member’s Mark Super Greens are affected by this recall. “Do not eat any Member’s Mark Super Greens powdered supplements containing moringa leaf powder. Throw them away or return them to where you bought them,” the CDC advised.
Contamination Source Identified
According to the FDA, the contamination has been traced to a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder supplied by Vallon Farm Direct PVT LTD, based in Jodhpur, India. The specific batch in question is lot VFD/ORG/MORP/L/24, with a best-by date of November 2027. This batch was distributed to multiple U.S. distributors, leading to a nationwide recall.
Investigators confirmed the link between the outbreak and the supplement after samples collected from the homes of ill individuals in Virginia and Michigan tested positive for the Salmonella Richmond strain.
“As part of this investigation, all Member’s Mark Super Greens dietary supplement powder has been recalled, regardless of lot codes and best by/use before dates,” the FDA stated in its latest update on Friday, October 31.
Ongoing Investigation and Warnings
Officials have warned that additional products containing moringa leaf powder from the same supplier could be added to the recall list as testing continues. Consumers and retailers are being advised to sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the product. Additionally, individuals who develop symptoms of a salmonella infection—such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours of exposure—are encouraged to seek medical attention.
Sam’s Club has informed customers directly and has stopped selling the supplement. The FDA emphasized that the investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine how and where the contamination occurred.
