Livingston Students Join Creative Workshop at Cleary University
A Unique Artistic Journey for High School Students
Cleary University recently welcomed over 20 art students from Fowlerville High School for a two-day immersive workshop inspired by the work of internationally renowned artist Arthur Secunda. The event, titled “Arthur Secunda Immersive Experience,” aimed to spark creativity and artistic talent among the participants through innovative techniques and hands-on learning.
The workshop was led by Jeff Von Buskirk, who guided the students through the life and works of Secunda, whose art is celebrated globally. One of the highlights of the event was a tour of the Arthur Secunda Museum at Cleary University, which houses the largest collection of his work—approximately 350 pieces. This collection serves as a valuable resource for students to explore and draw inspiration from.
During the workshop, students engaged in various art forms such as watercolor painting, linocut etching and printing, and collage creation. These are all mediums that Secunda used throughout his career. Von Buskirk conducted several demonstrations, allowing students to try out different techniques and apply them to their own projects.
A significant portion of the two days was dedicated to students creating their own original artwork inspired by Secunda’s style. This hands-on experience allowed them to express their creativity while learning about the artistic process.
Brett Rogers, director of marketing at Cleary University, emphasized the goals of the workshop. He stated, “Our goal … was for students to explore and express their own creativity, learn from and feel inspired by the works of Arthur Secunda, and apply this knowledge to their academic and career journey.”
Student Reactions and Future Opportunities
Mackenzie Redford, one of the participating students, described the workshop as amazing. She shared, “I felt I was doing something valuable. Secunda’s work with linocut and watercolors was inspiring and drew me into trying these on my own.”
The positive response from the students has paved the way for more high school students to benefit from similar experiences. Additional students from Brighton High School, Hartland High School, and Pinckney High School will have the opportunity to participate in the same workshop in the coming weeks. This expansion is made possible through grant funding from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, the Community Foundation of Livingston County, and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.
Public Access to the Museum
Families interested in exploring the museum can do so for free on specific dates throughout the year. These include November 9, December 14, January 11, February 8, March 15, April 12, and May 10. This initiative aims to make the museum accessible to a broader audience and encourage community engagement with the arts.
