Life-Saving Defibrillator Installed at Sports Field

A Defibrillator Installed at Loughborough Sports Ground

A new defibrillator has been installed at a sports ground in Loughborough, marking an important step in enhancing public safety. The installation was made possible through a partnership between Charnwood Borough Council and the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. The device is now located at Park Road, a site that sees a large number of visitors throughout the year.

The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust played a key role in this initiative by working closely with members of Loughborough Town Cricket Club. Together, they trained 18 volunteers on how to use the defibrillator effectively. This effort ensures that there are trained individuals available to respond quickly in case of a cardiac emergency.

Anne Gray, the council’s lead member for open spaces, emphasized the importance of the installation. She described it as “vital” for a location that attracts thousands of visitors annually. The defibrillator is accessible to everyone, including visitors, staff, and volunteers, making it a valuable resource for the community.

The council was responsible for funding and installing the defibrillator, while the storage cabinet was provided by the trust. This collaboration highlights the shared commitment of both organizations to improving public health and safety.

Steve Humphries, the chair of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, spoke about the critical nature of having such equipment available. He noted that sudden cardiac arrest can occur without warning and at any age. According to him, every minute without prompt CPR and access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) reduces the chance of survival by 10 percent.

“That’s why it’s so vitally important to have this lifesaving equipment readily available 24/7 across all communities and for a bystander to act immediately and without hesitation before the emergency services arrive,” he said.

The trust was established in memory of Rothley teenager Joe Humphries, who died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) while out on a run in 2012. His passing inspired the creation of the trust, which continues to promote awareness and the availability of life-saving devices.

The new defibrillator at Park Road is the third one installed in the Loughborough area by the council and the trust since 2022. This ongoing effort reflects a growing commitment to ensuring that communities have access to critical medical equipment when it’s needed most.

Alison Etty, representing Loughborough Cricket Club, expressed her excitement about the installation. She said the club was “delighted” with the addition of the defibrillator, which enhances the safety of their facility.

This initiative not only provides a vital service to the local community but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and quick action in emergency situations. With the support of local organizations and dedicated volunteers, Loughborough is taking meaningful steps toward creating a safer environment for everyone.
