Ty Jerome Out Four Weeks with Calf Strain
Guard Ty Jerome is expected to be out for at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a high-grade right calf strain, according to an announcement from the Grizzlies. The team stated that he will undergo another evaluation in mid-November.
Jerome sustained the injury during Friday’s preseason game against Miami. This setback comes as a blow to Memphis, which signed the 28-year-old combo guard to a three-year, $27.7 million contract this summer using the room exception. The deal was made with the intention of having Jerome play a crucial role in the backcourt rotation.
However, Jerome is now part of an expanding list of injured players on the team. Other players currently sidelined include Scotty Pippen Jr., who recently underwent toe surgery, Zach Edey, who is recovering from an ankle injury, and Brandon Clarke, who is dealing with a knee issue. All of these players are expected to miss significant time.
With four key rotation players currently out, the Grizzlies may qualify for a 10-day hardship exception after their third game of the season. According to Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian, the team could look to sign free agents such as Charles Bassey and Jared Butler to fill the void.
Jerome had a solid performance last season with Cleveland, averaging 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, and shooting 43.9 percent from three-point range. He finished third in the voting for the Sixth Man of the Year award. With his injury, rookie Javon Small and second-year guard Cam Spencer are now positioned to see more playing time.
-
This is a critical moment for the Grizzlies’ depth and strategy as they navigate through the early season with several key players out. The team will need to adjust its approach to maintain competitiveness while waiting for Jerome and others to return.
-
The potential signing of free agents like Bassey and Butler could provide much-needed support in the short term. These additions might help stabilize the roster and ensure that the team remains competitive despite the injuries.
-
As the season progresses, the Grizzlies will have to rely on their young talent and make strategic decisions to manage their roster effectively. The upcoming games will be a test of their depth and adaptability.
-
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adjusts to these challenges. The outcome of these decisions could significantly impact the Grizzlies’ performance throughout the season.
