Funding Cuts Risk HIV Services at Philadelphia Center

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Philadelphia Center was founded 36 years ago when someone or some group recognized the need to support individuals living with HIV. Since then, the organization has expanded its mission to include preventing the spread of the virus as well.

Today, the Philadelphia Center offers a wide range of services, including support programs for people living with HIV, STI testing, and access to PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for those who want it. Their overarching goal is to empower individuals affected by HIV, reduce new infections, and promote overall community wellness.

Most of their funding comes from federal sources, but according to Hersey Krippendorf, the director of development, these funds are not guaranteed. When asked if she felt concerned about this uncertainty, she responded, “Yes, every day. We’re just a phone call or an email away from losing our funding.” She added that if such a scenario were to occur, difficult decisions would have to be made.

Events like the Annual Auction Against AIDS play a critical role in supporting the center’s operations. The planning process for each auction takes most of the year, and the event is one of the organization’s most significant fundraising efforts. This year’s auction will take place on Saturday, November 1st, at Sam’s Town Casino.

The theme for this year’s event is inspired by the 1920s Harlem speakeasies and jazz halls. Attendees can expect an immersive experience that combines music, art, and hope, all under a masquerade theme that adds an element of mystery and elegance. Tickets for the event can be purchased through thephiladelphiacenter.org.
