A Teen’s Gift of Life: 18-Year-Old Honored for Organ Donation
A first-floor hallway at Memorial Health University Medical Center fell under a hush late Friday morning, even as three dozen staff lined the corridor. Within minutes a gurney carrying the body of J.T. Schroeder rolled down the hallway. About 20 family members accompanied their beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend as nurses and doctors readied a nearby operating room to extract his healthy organs for donation, a choice Schroeder made by checking a box on his driver’s license. The solemn ceremony is known as an Honor Walk, and the public is rarely given a glimpse.
Once Schroeder and family passed the line of nurses and doctors, the group turned a corner and paused for prayer. There, the ceremony ended, still in a state of deep quiet.
Schroeder succumbed to multiple stab wounds on Monday, four days after a deadly altercation at the Walmart on Highway 80 on Whitemarsh Island. He was 18 years old.
Chatham County Police arrested and charged 48-year-old Delano Middleton with Schroeder’s murder on Thursday.

“This young 18-year-old had the foresight to be able to put that on his license so that he could be an organ donor,” said James Dunne, Memorial’s chief of trauma services. “Not too many 18-year-old kids have that foresight to do so. That’s the impressive thing about this.”
Dunne said details of the donation, such as the number of viable organs donated or identified recipients, will not be known until after the procedure. About 3,000 people remain on the waiting list in Georgia for a kidney, heart or lungs, said Dunne. Nationwide, that number grows to about 100,000.
Kidneys, heart, lungs, eyes and tissues are all potential options for donation. The variety of organs available means multiple lives can be saved through just one donor, Dunne explained. “There’s obviously a greater need than there is people signing up to donate. If there’s one message I want to communicate to the community it’s please consider that.”We don’t, as individuals, get a chance to save someone’s life, but this is one way in which we all can save multiple lives.”
Schroeder’s family was not available for interviews Friday, but his obituary described him as a “mama’s boy,” who loved his mother’s home cooking. He also loved boating and spending time with his dad. “He loved deeply, laughed easily, and left an imprint on every heart that knew him. His kindness, humor, and love for his family and friends will forever echo in the lives he touched.”
A memorial service for Schroeder is scheduled for 2 p.m., Nov. 2, at Fox and Weeks’s Island Chapel location.
