Weld RE-4 Board Candidates on Parental Rights

When considering which candidates for the Weld RE-4 Board of Education you will support in the upcoming election, you may be curious about their perspectives on parental rights and how they define this concept. The Coloradoan sent identical questionnaires to all candidates running for seats on local school district boards of education in the Nov. 4, 2025, election. Below are their responses to the question: How do you define parental rights as it pertains to public education? What level of input should parents/guardians have in curriculum selection and content?

School board members in Colorado must reside within the geographic boundaries of the specific district that they hope to represent but are elected by all voters within the boundaries of their school district.

Christopher Kiraly

“Parental rights are about ensuring parents are active partners in their child’s education. Parents have the right to know what their children are learning, to ask questions and to advocate for their child’s individual needs.

At the same time, schools have a responsibility to provide a safe, inclusive and evidence-based learning environment for every student. Parental rights are about creating opportunities for meaningful input, participation and engagement in school and district decision-making. By working together, parents and schools can build trust while keeping the focus where it truly belongs, on our students, their growth and their success.”

Raymond Ruth

“Parental rights should fall within established legal frameworks. Access to review their child’s records and control the disclosure of any personal information. Participate in education and be informed and review instructional materials. Finally, they should have the right to opt their child out of specific instruction or activities that conflict with their beliefs, with the assurance that the student will receive an alternative assignment.

Parents are vital partners in selecting curriculum, and the district works with organized parent groups for structured input. However, I do not support allowing individual parents the right to unilaterally shape curriculum taught to all students. The district must maintain the authority to determine broad, consistent instructional content.”

Lance Nichols

“I believe every parent should have a say in their children’s education, and I work hard to ensure that. The Weld RE-4 school district has several district-wide committees focused on various aspects of school operations, planning and student well-being. One such committee is our Curriculum Review Committee. This committee evaluates curriculum requests and recommends or declines it. This committee is made up of members that include teachers, administrators, parents and students.”
