Learning Without Compromise After School Rebuild
The trust responsible for a school that was demolished and then rebuilt has made sure that students’ education remains unaffected throughout the process. Buckton Fields Primary School, located in Boughton near Northampton, opened its doors in 2021 but had to close in August 2023 due to structural safety concerns raised by the Department for Education (DfE). The trust is now working on constructing a new school, with hopes that parts of the building will be ready for use by December 2026 and the full structure completed by February.
Paul Watson, the chief executive officer of the Preston Hedges Trust, praised the community’s support during this challenging time. He said, “The community has been absolutely brilliant and really supported us, and our parents have been terrific.” This positive response has helped maintain morale among staff and families as they wait for the new facility to be completed.
Mr. Watson shared some exciting plans for the new school, emphasizing that it will be even better for the students. The improvements include an all-weather sports pitch, an updated library, and a multipurpose hall that can serve as a community space. Additionally, the new school will be more environmentally friendly, incorporating sustainable practices and green technology. “It will be greener, more eco-friendly, and environmentally friendly as well as a bigger, better school which our children and families really deserve,” he added.
Buckton Fields was one of three UK schools temporarily closed by the DfE due to structural safety concerns. Alongside Sir Frederick Gibberd College in Harlow and Haygrove School in Somerset, Buckton Fields faced the same challenges. Despite the need to relocate students to nearby schools, Mr. Watson emphasized that their education has not been compromised. “Their education hasn’t been compromised, and the children have been super,” he said.
He also expressed his concern about ensuring that the school does not let down the families and students during this transition. However, the support from families and the resilience of the staff have played a crucial role in keeping the school’s spirit strong. “The one worry I had was that we didn’t let down our families and our children throughout this,” he said.
Looking ahead, Mr. Watson is excited about the future of the school. “Everybody is looking forward to coming home and celebrating the completion of the new school,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of the people within the school, stating, “The building is really important, but actually, what makes the school is the people inside it.”
As the construction progresses, the community continues to show support and anticipation for the new facility. The trust remains committed to providing a safe, modern, and welcoming environment for students and families.
