Young Leader Aims for Harford County School Board

Liliana Norkaitis Enters Race for Harford County School Board

Liliana Norkaitis, a 21-year-old recent graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park, has officially filed as a candidate for a seat on the Harford County Board of Education. As the second candidate to enter the race, Norkaitis is focusing on three main goals: budget accountability, curriculum accountability, and improved resources for students.

“I believe it’s essential for our students to have a rigorous curriculum that challenges them and pushes them to succeed at their highest potential,” Norkaitis said. “That means offering more honors courses and creating a culture that rewards high achievement among top performers in HCPS. By doing this, we can improve test scores and increase the number of students who achieve academic success within the school system.”

The upcoming election will see six seats on the Board of Education up for grabs. The board consists of six elected members, three appointed by the county executive for four-year terms, and one student member elected by the Harford County Regional Association of Student Councils for a one-year term.

Norkaitis is running to represent District C on the school board. Joe Fleckenstein has also filed for the same seat, while current District C incumbent Carol Mueller has not yet announced whether she will seek re-election. Mueller has been on the board since 2020.

As a graduate of Harford County Public Schools, Norkaitis was actively involved in student government and other organizations that helped her gain a deeper understanding of the Board of Education. She currently serves as the vice chair of the Harford County Commission for Women, where she has built valuable partnerships and connected with her community. Since 2024, she has also been a member of the Republican Central Committee and is running to retain her position on the committee during this election cycle.

If elected to the school board, Norkaitis plans to review the resources and programs available within the school system to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent effectively and directly benefiting students. She also hopes to implement training programs for students focused on financial literacy, job market navigation, and basic auto and household maintenance. These trainings could be offered online or in-person.
