GBAPS Finalizes Superintendent Search Process

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Area Public School district is taking steps to ensure they find the right leader for their community. As they begin the process of searching for a new superintendent, officials are emphasizing transparency and community involvement.

At a recent board meeting, district leaders and CESA 7 representatives discussed their approach to the search. CESA 7 is an organization that the district has partnered with to help manage the process. Board member Alex Mineau highlighted the significance of this decision, noting that it’s crucial for the district after several changes in leadership over the past few years.

One of the key components of the process involves gathering input from the community. Officials plan to send out a survey asking residents about the qualities they believe the next superintendent should possess. This survey will be refined based on feedback from the board before being presented as an action item for the board to consider voting on next month.

In addition to the survey, there will be opportunities for community focus groups and other forms of engagement. This allows residents to have a voice in shaping the future of the district.

CESA 7 outlined a timeline for the search process:

  • Candidates can apply for the position between December 8 and January 23.
  • A pre-screening of selected candidates will take place from January 27 to February 6.
  • The first round of interviews is scheduled for February 24, 25, and 26.
  • The second round of interviews will occur on March 4, 5, and 6.
  • The district will announce the new superintendent on March 11.
  • The board will approve the new superintendent’s contract on March 23.

While these dates are tentative, officials noted that they may need to adjust them if necessary.

The district has experienced significant turnover in its leadership since 2020. Michelle Langenfeld retired after the 2019-2020 school year. Her successor, Steven Murley, left after less than two years due to health issues. Vicki Bayer served as interim superintendent until Claude Tiller Jr. was hired in the spring of 2023. Tiller Jr. resigned shortly after due to controversial remarks made on a radio show. Bayer returned as interim superintendent and was later appointed as the permanent superintendent in December.

Bayer has stated that she does not intend to remain in the role long-term. She confirmed this during a recent meeting with Local 5 News.

Board members emphasized the importance of making the right choice this time. They acknowledged the challenges faced by the district over the past several years and are committed to ensuring a more informed selection process.

“We’re really focused on trying to be much more informed going into the later stages than we were last time,” said board president James Lyerly. “I’m really excited with what they were able to present tonight.”

The district has allocated approximately $14,500 to CESA 7 for the search process, which is significantly less than the cost of hiring another organization, such as the Wisconsin Association of School Boards.

When asked about his confidence in the process, Lyerly responded, “I am as confident as what I see in front of me. I see a plan that matches what we see in other educational institutions like University of Wisconsin Green Bay. There’s always variability, but I think we have touched all the bases and we’re set up for success.”
