Lakewood School Board Endorses Superintendents Plan for Elementary Schools’ Future

LAKEWOOD, Ohio (WOIO) – The Lakewood School Board made a significant decision on Monday night, following the recommendations of Superintendent Maggie Niedzwiecki regarding the future of the district’s elementary school facilities. This move marks an important step in reimagining how the district will operate in the coming years.

Superintendent Niedzwiecki presented her proposals during a board meeting on October 6, outlining a comprehensive plan that aims to optimize the use of existing school buildings and improve educational opportunities for students. One of the key components of her plan is the repurposing of Lincoln Elementary School into an early learning center. This new facility would offer before-school, after-school, and summer child care services, providing essential support for families in the community.

In addition to this, the plan includes several strategic changes related to special education and specialized programming. These adjustments are designed to better meet the needs of students with diverse learning requirements and to create more efficient use of school spaces.

Key Changes in the Plan

• CHAMPS Program Relocation: The CHAMPS program, currently located in the basement of Horace Mann Elementary, will be moved to the first floor of Hayes Elementary. This change is expected to provide a more accessible and suitable environment for students participating in the program.

• RISE Classroom Move: The RISE classroom, which is currently at Emerson Elementary, will be relocated to the former CHAMPS space at Horace Mann. This shift will allow for a more cohesive use of resources and space within the district.

• Playground Improvements: The plan calls for the expansion or rebuilding of playgrounds at Emerson and Horace Mann Elementary schools, as well as an expansion of the playground at Hayes Elementary. These upgrades aim to enhance outdoor learning and recreational opportunities for students.

• Gifted Program Relocation: The self-contained gifted program, which is currently at Grant Elementary, will be moved to Hayes Elementary. This change is intended to provide a more centralized location for advanced learners and to better integrate their curriculum with other programs.

The implementation of these changes will not occur immediately. Instead, the plan is set to take effect in 2027. As part of this transition, all elementary school boundaries will be redrawn for the 2027–2028 school year. This adjustment is necessary to ensure that the new configurations align with the updated facility arrangements and student enrollment patterns.

The Lakewood School Board’s decision reflects a commitment to modernizing the district’s infrastructure and improving the overall educational experience for students. By making these strategic changes, the district hopes to create a more efficient, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all its students.
