Hawaii Launches 100th Public Preschool Classroom
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The state of Hawaiʻi has taken a significant step forward in early childhood education by opening its 100th public preschool. This milestone is part of the “Ready Keiki” initiative, led by Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke. The new preschool is located at Maunawili Elementary in Kailua, marking an important addition to the island’s educational resources.
Luke was joined by the Executive Office on Early Learning during the celebration, which highlighted the growing commitment to providing quality early education for children across the islands. The initiative aims to ensure that every child, regardless of their background or location, has access to a strong foundation for future success.
“Just a few years ago, there were only a few dozen public pre-K classrooms statewide,” Luke said. “Now, we’re celebrating our 100th. This just shows Hawaiʻi’s commitment to every child, every family and every community. Ready Keiki is about giving our youngest learners the foundation to thrive while ensuring families can access trusted early education no matter where they live.”
Since the launch of the “Ready Keiki” program in 2023, the Executive Office on Early Learning and its partner organizations have made remarkable progress. They have more than tripled the number of public preschools across the islands, creating new opportunities for families and children.
Yuuko Arikawa-Cross, director of the Executive Office on Early Learning, emphasized the importance of this expansion. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we know our work continues,” she said. “Every new classroom represents a doorway to opportunity for families. Our goal is to meet families where they are and ensure every keiki in Hawaiʻi has access to a strong start.”
Each new classroom can accommodate up to 20 students aged three to four. The program prioritizes children who are experiencing homelessness, in foster care, or facing other at-risk circumstances. This ensures that those who need support the most can benefit from the program. Additionally, the preschool offers year-round enrollment, making it easier for families to access these critical services.
For families interested in enrolling their children or joining the waitlist, the Executive Office on Early Learning provides online resources. Parents and guardians can visit the official website to learn more about eligibility, application processes, and available programs.
The growth of the “Ready Keiki” initiative reflects a broader effort to address the needs of young children and their families. By expanding access to early education, the program supports long-term academic and personal success for children throughout Hawaiʻi.
As the initiative continues to expand, it serves as a model for other communities looking to invest in the future of their youngest residents. With each new classroom, more families gain the tools and support they need to help their children thrive.
